Service Projects

The Rotary Club of Swarthmore is committed to local and international Community Service Projects to help those in need.  Following are some of the projects we have supported in the past.

  • Fundraising for Polio Plus
    On October 23, 2009, the Rotary Club of Swarthmore held an auction at the Swarthmore Community Center.  The auction was attended by roughly 100 members of the community in addition to Rotarians.  Through donations that included vacation homes, sports tickets, art, jewelery and much more, plus the generosity of many sponsors, the event netted $11,500.
  • Belize Water Purification
    The Belize water purification project provided a remote town with the facility they needed to properly filter water making it safe for consumption.  Of the 5 clubs plus funds from the Rotary Foundation, the Rotary Club of Swarthmore provided 40{e38bddcbf222e70e913d9f736bf5132b63e1e4b0e8a91dc68afbb80c7500f6c9} of the funding for the project.
  • Cornerstone Project
    The club provided support to this pre-school program in Belize that provides food to children.Amigos de Guatemala
    The club provided an $800 scholarship to educate a student for a year.
  • Vocational Service
    Lead club supporting a grant totaling over $8500 to purchase library books for the Chester Upland School of the Arts.
  • Reading program  – Columbus Elementary School , Chester, PA
    Rotarians and volunteers read to elementary students every Wednesday and the Club allocated funds to purchase books for the program.
  • Rotary Leadership Institute
    The club sent 8 members for training this year
  • RYLA – Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
    The Club sent 12 students to RYLA this year – 10 students from Strath Haven High School, 1 from Chester High School, and 1 from a Philadelphia High School.
  • Independence Day Celebrations
    The Club participated in the July 4th celebrations including presenting a Vocational service Award and Community Service Award to members of the community.
  • Annual Swarthmore Fun Fair
    Planned and coordinated the annual fair on Apriil 18, which raised approximately $33,000 for charities.
  • World of Work
    Rotarians accompany grade 5 students from Swarthmore Rutledge Elementary School to businesses throughout Swarthmore giving a fresh perspective on how the businesses work.
  • Humanitarian Relief for Haiti
    Through the generosity of Club Members and members of the Community, we raided over $10,000 to provide shelter and basic living provisions for 100 people following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
  • Delaware County Literacy Council
    Grant of $750 plus matching grant from the Gundaker Foundation for a total of $1500
